The media is warning us of the environmental risk of failing to recycling plastics properly. So could artificial plants actually be endangering our planet? The Green Envee team considers the arguments before and against artificial plants.
The intangible benefits of greenery
There can be no argument against the fact that lush greenery signifies luxury, a comfortable atmosphere, wellbeing and prosperity. It doesn’t matter if it’s inside or outside, people use plants for a lot more than just oxygen and food. But how can we benefit from the intangible benefits of plants in places where plants don’t want to grow?
The answer has to lie in artificial plants. They don’t need water, are not temperature sensitive, are indifferent to low light levels and, can be just as beautiful as living plants. Having said that, I’ve seen some pretty horrible plastic plants in my time. They did nothing to improve my mood and I dread to think how they were made and what from.
At Green Envee we’re a bit fussy about our artificial plants. I won’t pretend that they’re the cheapest on the market, but I AM confident of their green credentials.
Made from recycled waste
Every single one of our artificial plants and all of our landscaping products are made from recycled constituents wherever possible.
That includes our composite decking, our artificial turf, our green wall panels, and our artificial specimen plants. I know that it uses energy to create recycled products from waste and that in some ways it’s no substitute for the “real” thing. But if the Wombles of Wimbledon Common taught us anything, surely it was that it’s better to turn rubbish into something useful than to simply discard it.
Easily recycled
In Green Envee’s world, there’s nothing done that can’t be undone. Any of our artificial plants, pots, tables or chairs can themselves be recycled when their useful life is over.
Mind you – the average lifespan for artificial plants of this quality is quite lengthy. Everything in our product range is designed to last longer and perform better than their traditional alternatives.
Waterwise
A topical subject in the world of landscaping right now is water. From time to time we experience real problems with water shortages. Even in the UK. Architects, interior designers and landscape professionals are all being (strongly) encouraged to come up with waterwise alternatives for traditional drainage systems, plumbing and exteriors.
So, on the ground we have permeable paving. On top of buildings there are green roofs. Most develops have SUDS (sustainable urban drainage solutions) and horticulturists are continually seeking and breeding drought tolerant plants.
Green Envee plants are VERY drought tolerant. They don’t need any water at all.
Are artificial plants truly green?
I truly believe that good quality artificial plants that are ethically sourced do have some advantages over living plants in some circumstances. It’s vital that the artificial plants are carefully selected for appearance, longevity and easy-care properties. I too hate those nasty plastic imitation box balls that turn blue when they’re left in the sun. And I’m saddened when I see dead plants in shopping centres and offices.
I come from a landscape background which means that I value wellbeing, ambience and visual impact. In my humble opinion, good quality artificial plants can supply those things in abundance with minimal environmental impact.
